the new name for the YO Bakehouse coffee house & eatery

Our new name stems back to Turner ancestors from as far back as 1832. Hannah Lutt and William Turner set up business making cartwheels in Chatteris, Cambridgeshire. Due to a devastating fire that wiped out the business, the family uprooted and moved to Whitby in search of new opportunities.

Down the line, a new family business was established in the fishing trade, under the command of E. Turner (E Turner & Son can be seen in many of Frank Sutcliffe’s photographs of late-Victorian Whitby). Later developments saw the creation of Turner & Son under Edward Lutt Turner. Trade included a string of shops including fishmongers, grocers, and game merchants.

Edward Lutt Turner was the driving force in the creation of the Whitby pier extensions and soon became a key figure in the town for his contribution to the local fishing trade. Following his time at the realm, the business continued to be passed down the generations, with Turner & Son always being at the forefront for modernising the fishing industry in the locality.

Business and entrepreneurship has always been significant in the Turner family and remains true today. Chris and David Turner established YO Bakehouse in 2015 as a cottage baking business supplying local businesses. From then the company has gone from strength to strength, much like that of Turner & Son all those years ago. For this reason, it felt only right to rename the Malton eatery after the two people that got the wheels in motion all those years ago.
